1.
Lead with your best foot forward. For example if you have a
wealth of Employment Experience, but not so much formal Education, shape
your resume to illuminate and focus on that experience. Never dwell on
what you do not have, but sell what you do!!!
2.
Determine the type of resume that best fits you. Functional and
Chronological are the two most common. Chronological focuses on your
work experience and education based most often on a timeline layout.
Whereas a Functional resume typically highlights your skills and
accomplishments first with work experience after. It is important to
determine which type works best for your situation. The MFRC Coordinator
of Employment Services can help.
3.
The third thing is to be honest. Selling your skills properly is
one thing, making up accreditations or embellishing upon accomplishments
is entirely another. When you think of your resume as a one to two page
capture of who you are and what you can offer an employer, do you want
lead with dishonesty as your first step. Even if you are not caught by
the employer and are hired, eventually you will be and the thing that
will suffer is your reputation and chance to receive future employment
anywhere!!! The old motto rings true, save your-self embarrassment and
remember Honesty is always the best policy.
4.
The next step is to create an easy to read Resume, one that takes
little effort to find the information you want to find. If you consider
for any one Employment Opportunity the employer has to filter through
countless resumes, make sure yours in one the employer keeps. This can
be done making it easy to read. Section Headers, formatting, and white
space are the best ways to do this. Good heading and proper spacing can
make finding information easy and quick, and not challenging to the
employer. You know exactly what your resume says, and where the
information is, but think as an Employer. Always remember to think as if
you were the employer. If you had a pile of resumes to look through,
would you give much thought to one that was a strain on the eyes to find
the information you want.
5.
Lastly is insuring the overall look of the resume is appealing to
the eye. Make sure your name stands out on the page; you want your name
to stand out, remember it is YOUR resume! Proofread again and again to
ensure there are no grammatical or spelling mistakes on your resume.
This shows that you do thorough work, and care about your work. Be
concise with descriptions, perhaps use bullets to create an even flowing
look to the resume.
